Africa's Most Beloved
Summit Trail

Known as the "Whiskey Route" — the bold, challenging counterpart to Marangu's "Coca-Cola" trail — the Machame Route is Kilimanjaro's most popular path and for very good reason. Approaching the mountain from the south, it threads through four distinct ecological zones: lush montane rainforest, heather moorland, alpine desert, and finally the stark, icy Arctic summit zone.

The 7-day itinerary is strongly recommended over 6 days. The extra day allows for a rest stop at Karanga Camp, significantly improving acclimatisation and boosting your summit success rate. The famous "climb high, sleep low" profile of Day 3 — ascending to Lava Tower at 4,630m before descending to Barranco Camp at 3,960m — is one of the most effective acclimatisation techniques on the mountain.

Machame is a fully catered camping route. Our professional crew carries all tents, food, and camp equipment. Each morning starts with hot tea and washing water delivered to your tent, and every evening ends with a warm three-course meal in the mess tent. You carry only your day pack — we handle the rest.

The famous Barranco Wall on Day 4 is a highlight that no Kilimanjaro climber forgets: a near-vertical scramble up a dramatic basalt cliff, with Kibo's ice-capped summit looming above and a sea of clouds rolling below. It requires hands and feet but no technical climbing skill — just determination and a head for heights.

Your Journey

01
Machame Gate → Machame Hut Camp
Elevation: 1,800m → 3,020m Distance: 11km Hiking Time: 5–7 hrs
+

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at Machame Gate, where you'll complete park formalities and meet your full mountain crew — your lead guide, assistant guides, cook, and porters. After a briefing and final kit check, the trail enters the dense montane rainforest immediately.

The forest is alive with the calls of Colobus monkeys and Turaco birds as the path climbs steadily through giant tree ferns, hanging mosses, and dripping vegetation. The forest can be muddy and slippery — gaiters are useful here. The trail eventually emerges above the tree line as afternoon clouds roll in. Machame Hut Camp sits on a ridge with dramatic views back through the forest.

Machame Hut → Shira Camp
Elevation: 3,020m → 3,840m Distance: 5km Hiking Time: 4–6 hrs
+

Leaving the forest behind, today's trail climbs through the heather and moorland zone. Giant heather (Erica arborea) draped in old man's beard lichen lines the path, giving way to dramatic rocky ridgelines. The views begin to open up — on a clear morning, Kibo's summit dome appears above for the first time.

The path follows a rocky ridge before crossing a broad lava plateau to reach Shira Camp, set on the ancient Shira Plateau — the remnant of Kilimanjaro's oldest volcano. The plateau views are extraordinary, with sweeping panoramas in every direction. Tonight is your first real night of altitude; rest well and drink plenty of water.

03
Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp
Elevation: 3,840m → 4,630m → 3,960m Distance: 10km Hiking Time: 6–8 hrs
+

This is the key acclimatisation day on the Machame Route — and one of the most spectacular. The morning ascent crosses the lunar alpine desert towards the towering Lava Tower (4,630m), a dramatic 300-metre volcanic plug that rises like a broken fist from the plateau. Lunch is taken here at altitude.

After lunch, the trail descends steeply into the Great Barranco Valley — a lush, otherworldly gorge filled with giant groundsels (Senecio kilimanjari) and lobelias that look like they belong on another planet. This "climb high, sleep low" profile is enormously beneficial for acclimatisation. Barranco Camp sits below the iconic Barranco Wall, which you'll tackle tomorrow morning.

04
Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp
Elevation: 3,960m → 4,035m Distance: 5km Hiking Time: 4–5 hrs
+

The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall — Kilimanjaro's most exhilarating scramble. The route finds its way up a 257-metre cliff face via a series of exposed ledges and rocky handholds. Despite its dramatic appearance, the wall requires no technical climbing; your guides will assist at every tricky move. The reward at the top is one of the most breathtaking views on the entire mountain: Kibo summit ahead, a carpet of clouds below.

After the wall, the trail traverses the mountain's southern face across a series of ridges and valleys before descending into Karanga Valley — the last water source on the mountain. Karanga Camp is a relatively short day, intentionally so. Rest here, hydrate thoroughly, and prepare your summit kit.

05
Karanga Camp → Barafu Base Camp
Elevation: 4,035m → 4,640m Distance: 4km Hiking Time: 4–5 hrs
+

A shorter day by design — saving your energy for tonight's summit push. The trail climbs steadily across the barren alpine desert to Barafu Base Camp, perched on a rocky ridge with sweeping views in both directions. "Barafu" means "ice" in Swahili — a fitting name for a camp where temperatures drop below freezing at night.

After arriving, eat a full hot meal, organise your summit kit carefully, and rest in your tent from early afternoon. Your guides will wake you between midnight and 1am for the summit push. Sleep if you can — even light rest helps at altitude. The camp's exposed position means cold, gusty winds; layer up well.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Early Dinner Camp: Barafu (4,640m) Note: Early rest for summit night
06
Summit Push → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp
Elevation: 4,640m → 5,895m → 3,100m Distance: 17km Hiking Time: 12–16 hrs
+

The big day. Departure from Barafu is typically between midnight and 1am — climbing by headtorch in a silent, freezing darkness. The trail climbs steeply through loose scree and volcanic rock, a slow, relentless zigzag upwards. The altitude makes every step feel heavier. Guides call the pace: "pole, pole" — slowly, slowly.

Stella Point (5,756m) is reached just before dawn — the crater rim, and the hardest part is behind you. Here, the path levels out along the crater's edge towards Uhuru Peak. The sunrise above the clouds from here is one of the most extraordinary sights on earth: a burning orange horizon, glaciers glowing pink, the entire continent spread below. Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the Roof of Africa — usually takes another 45–60 minutes from Stella Point.

After photographs at the summit sign, descent begins immediately down the Mweka Route to Mweka Camp (3,100m). The descent is long on tired legs — trekking poles are invaluable. A celebratory dinner and the warmth of a lower altitude camp await you.

07
Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Arusha
Elevation: 3,100m → 1,640m Distance: 10km Hiking Time: 3–4 hrs
+

The final descent through the forest to Mweka Gate — and the real world. The trail passes quickly through the upper moorland and then drops back into the lush rainforest. Wildflowers line the lower path. The sound of birds returns. You'll find the forest feels entirely different on the way down: warmer, richer, more alive.

At Mweka Gate, your KINAPA summit certificate is presented — signed proof that you stood on the Roof of Africa. Tips are traditionally given to your crew here: a meaningful moment of gratitude between you and the people who carried, cooked, and guided you safely to the summit. Your WildRush vehicle then transfers you back to Arusha for a hot shower, a cold drink, and the best sleep of your life.
