Everything You Need to Know About the
Lemosho Route

The Lemosho Route is considered by many experienced mountaineers to be the finest route on Kilimanjaro. Starting from the remote western trailhead at Londorossi Gate, it winds through pristine montane forest that sees far fewer boots than the southern routes — wildlife encounters including buffalo, elephant, and colobus monkey are not uncommon in the first two days.

After the forest, the route crosses the spectacular Shira Plateau — a vast, ancient volcanic landscape that predates Kilimanjaro itself. The plateau is hauntingly beautiful, with extraordinary 360-degree views of the summit and the distant plains of Kenya and Tanzania stretching endlessly below.

From the Shira Plateau, Lemosho joins the Machame route at Barranco Camp and shares the final days to the summit — including the famous Barranco Wall scramble and the long ascent from Barafu to Uhuru Peak. The 8-day duration provides significantly more acclimatisation time than shorter routes, contributing to the route's industry-leading success rate of 90% and above.

The longer western access drive (3–4 hours from Moshi/Arusha) is more than compensated by the extraordinary solitude and scenery of the first two days. This is the route we recommend for climbers who want the complete Kilimanjaro experience — maximum scenery, maximum success rate, and minimum crowds.

The adventure begins with a 3–4 hour drive west from Arusha to Londorossi Gate, where you register and meet your mountain crew. The trailhead feels genuinely remote — unlike the busier southern gates. The trail enters a spectacular moss-draped rainforest that feels almost primordial.

Buffalo, elephant, and bushbuck roam these lower forests. Your guide will brief you on wildlife awareness. The trail climbs gently through giant podocarpus trees to a forest camp with sweeping views back down the mountain's western slopes.

The trail climbs out of the forest into the heather zone, where giant heather stretches to the horizon and the first wide views of Kibo's summit appear ahead. The mood changes dramatically — open sky, wind, and the first real sense of altitude.

Shira Camp 1 sits on the edge of the ancient Shira Plateau — the collapsed remnant of Kilimanjaro's third and oldest volcano. The sunsets from here are extraordinary, with the plateau glowing orange as the summit catches the last light.

A shorter day crossing the Shira Plateau itself — one of the most remarkable high-altitude landscapes in the world. The plateau feels enormous: 6km wide and almost perfectly flat, ringed by volcanic ridges, with Kibo dominating the eastern skyline.

Camp 2 offers a short acclimatisation hike option in the afternoon up to the Shira Cathedral (a dramatic rock spire at ~4,000m) before returning to camp. The views from the Cathedral take your breath away — literally and figuratively.

One of the route's great days. Ascending through the alpine desert to Lava Tower (4,630m) for a crucial acclimatisation boost before descending north to the remote Moir Hut camp — an option unique to the Lemosho route that most other routes miss entirely.

Moir Hut sits at the base of the Lent Hills, offering optional half-day hikes in the afternoon that climb to 4,800m+ — superb for acclimatisation. The camp has almost no other climbers: it's just your team, the alpine desert, and the mountain.

The trail traverses the mountain's northern flank, offering unique views rarely seen on other routes — the quiet, semi-arid northern slopes with Kenya's Amboseli plains visible on the horizon on clear days.

The path descends into the extraordinary Great Barranco Valley, with its forest of giant groundsel and lobelia — a truly alien landscape. The famous Barranco Wall rises dramatically behind camp, ready for tomorrow morning.

The Barranco Wall in the morning — Kilimanjaro's most thrilling scramble. A near-vertical 257-metre cliff of basalt, navigated via ledges and handholds with your guides' assistance. The view from the top is one of the mountain's great rewards.

After the wall, the trail crosses the southern face to Karanga Camp — the last water source on the mountain. Rest, hydrate, and begin organising your summit kit for the final push.

A short, steep final climb to Barafu Base Camp. The alpine desert here is stark and beautiful — nothing grows above 4,500m except lichen on the rocks. Arrive early, eat well, rest deeply. Summit departure is around midnight.

Barafu means "ice" in Swahili. Temperatures drop well below freezing after dark. Ensure every layer is accessible before you get into your sleeping bag.

Midnight departure by headtorch, climbing through freezing darkness and scree to Stella Point (5,756m) just before dawn. Then the crater rim walk to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the Roof of Africa — timed to catch the sunrise. An unforgettable moment.

After summit photographs and a moment of genuine awe, the long descent via Mweka Route carries you back to Mweka Camp (3,100m) — a celebratory dinner, warmth, and rest awaiting you at the end of the longest day.
